The role of a counsellor or therapist is extremely diverse. Fundamentally, it will be your job to help people manage and cope with their issues. There are a huge number of different fields in counselling, but you should be a real people person. And you should get a kick out of helping others.
A key aspect of being a great counsellor is being non-judgmental. You’ll meet people from all different backgrounds experiencing different kinds of problems. Many of them will have endured some tough life experiences. Your job will be to steer them back into a place where they can be comfortable in themselves and integrate themselves into society.
You’ll be a great listener, calm, and sensitive to people’s feelings. You’ll have a deep knowledge of psychology, and you can work on this by attaining higher levels certificates and diplomas. But a good stepping stone to get you started could be a BTEC Higher National Certificate or Diploma in Healthcare Practice.
